MIT visualizes New York’s communication with the World

Did you know that:

- Communication between Manhattan and the world increases dramatically each morning after opening bell of the NYSE.

- About 8 percent of all overseas calls from Manhattan are made to London.

- Five countries Canada, Great Britain, the Dominican Republic, Germany and Japan account for more than half of the calls made from Manhattan.

- New Yorkers engaged in global communication tend to come from either top or rock bottom of the economy whereas the vast middle population talks locally or nationally.

These are some the interesting findings made by the MIT with their New York Talk Exchange project. The project is using data supplied by AT&T which is providing anonymous data on calls, message, emails, cyber phone connections and web browsing for this study.

Carlo Ratti, director of the SENSEable City Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said:

“Our cities and the globe are blanketed with flowing bits of digital data, and looking at this data, we’re able to better understand the physical world.”

The project team has created 3 types of visualizations so far. The first is Globe Encounters which uses 3-D real-time animations to show New York’s links to world cities. The second, Pulse of the Planet shows how those connections change as day passes across the planet. The third, World Inside New York, explores New York’s five boroughs to find out how the global connections vary from neighborhood to neighborhood.
