OpenMac: A Mac Clone For $399 By Psystar
Technology Tuesday, April 15th, 2008Psystar corporation seems to have solved the compatibility issues of running Mac OS X
on PC hardware. The company has built a system with standard PC parts which runs Leopard (OS X 10.5) which is named as Open Computer. The compatibility for OS X on Open Computer is achieved through an EFI emulator.
The Open Computer’s specifications include a 2.2-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 2GB of DDR2 667 memory and integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics. The Mac clone also includes a 20x DVD+/-R drive, four USB ports and a 250GB, 7200-RPM drive.
The cheapest computer from Apple is priced at $1999 and even the Mac mini priced at $599 is high priced and less capable in comparison to the clone made by Psystar. However, the licensing issues seems to be a problem as Psystar does not have any apparent agreement with Apple to offer Mac OS X on non-Apple computers. Let’s see how Apple reacts to its latest clone.
Update: Both Gizmodo and The Guardian are suggesting that Psystar is a hoax as according to their investigation their is no company registered in Miami with this name and the address given on the website does not have Psystar office. Do not try any transaction on the Psystar website.
