Charles Darwin’s Complete Work Goes Online
Asides Thursday, April 17th, 2008The Cambridge University Library has published Charles Darwin’s “On The Origin Of Species” for browsing on the Internet. This is the first time in the history when the work of Darwin has been made available to the general public. Charles Darwin, who also wrote The Voyage of the Beagle, got established as a scientific thought leader after his work on the “On The Origin Of Species” got published in 1859.
The papers are available on http://darwin-online.org.uk and contain:
- Nearly 20,000 items and 90,000 images.
- Thousands of notes and drafts of Darwin’s scientific writings and first recorded doubts about the permanence of species.
- Photographs of Darwin and his family, newspaper clippings and reviews of his books.
- Darwin’s wife Emma’s recipe book which has recipes for ‘Ilkley pudding’ and a recipe for boiling, rice written by Darwin himself.
Darwin’s work on “On The Origin Of Species” had sparked a major public debate and the Church of England had declared the book as heretical. Thought this topic is slightly unrelated to this blog but I thought of sharing this as I am sure all these papers from a great researcher like Darwin will be good read for all.
