AOL India Adds Video Portal; To Focus On Movies And Celebrities

AOL India has launched its Video portal focused on Indian audience.  The portal is powered with AOL’s video search technology, Truveo.  As per AOL, Truveo has indexed over 170 million videos from 16 countries across the world.

The content on AOL India Video site is more aligned towards movies, music and celebrity news.  There is no facility for the people to upload their own videos.

Bringing in content focused on local taste is a good strategy but the AOL needs to widen its scope and should offer variety of content instead of entertainment videos only.

YouTube which launched its localized version for Indian audience recently provides more options for the users in terms of the type of video content.  Moreover, YouTube has more and better community features as well as the ability for users to upload their own videos which makes it a better option for users.

Overall, AOL India’s Video portal looks like a desperate and half-cooked effort to put up a fight against YouTube India.
