If you are offering your services for hire then this will mean that you are working as a commissioned artist you will be able to take the recognition, your name will be put on your work.  You will also normally own the copyright unless you sign it away.

One very common way to make money as a painter is to become a portrait painter.  You might not be able to land a commission from a large organisation however you should be able to do portraits of individuals without much experience.

Lots of people like the idea of portraits but don’t have the skills to do it themselves. Brides, mothers and people celebrating their anniversaries will all want portraits.  If you enjoy painting people then painting portraits will be very enjoyable and also profitable.

If you are a good portrait artist then you will get to know lots of different people. If you like to paint when people are there then you can complete a portrait in a couple of sittings. However a much easier option would be to take photo and paint from that instead.

When trying to get new business you will find it much easier if you have a portfolio. Spend time developing your portfolio and building it. Whenever you paint paintings you should ask your clients if you can include them in your portfolio for reference.

Before you can hope to make a profit from painting you first need to buy the right supplies. You will need to buy brushes, paint, canvas, paper and easels. These can sometimes be quite expensive which is why you must budget for them in advance.

It’s also important that you purchase a computer, phone, and fax machine. It’s also important to register for an email account and also set up a website for yourself. Thanks to the internet you will be able to receive photos from people wherever they are in the country; this means that you can complete long distance portraits.

Before you can start work on any project you will first need to have something to show prospective clients. Get yourself some samples so that people are confident with your abilities.  Portrait painters will need to be determined and patient until they can make their business idea pay off.
