Google Data API team has announced the support for Contact Groups and Contact Photos in the new Google Contacts API.

With Contact Groups functionality, web applications will be able to offer grouping the contacts, access to Google Contact groups, and the basic CRUD operations on contact groups.

The Contact Photos feature will allow for accessing, editing, and removing the contact photos. The web applications can now show the photos of a user’s contacts besides other details using the API.

I have always been a fan of Google Contacts API and addition of these two features have made it all the more useful for both application developers and users.

Check out the Google Contacts API documentation to know more about these features.

Plaxo, which was looking for getting acquired for a long time, has finally managed to get acquired by one of its customers, ComCast.

The company will continue to operate as an independent unit post the acquisition and will report into Comcast Interactive Media. ComCast which was using Plaxo’s addressbook service for its webmail users will integrate Plaxo’s services including the social network, Pulse, into its properties like Fancast and Fandango.

Plaxo’s universal addressbook is very useful service and has a huge user base but Pulse has failed to get traction and didn’t take off really. We might get to see some other uses of Pulse and its effectiveness once it gets integrated in the ComCast’s suite of services.

Did you know that you can access your Outlook emails from Microsoft Exchange server without using a computer, mobile phone or any other mobile device like PDA etc. Yes, you read it right. The new feature in Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 named Outlook Voice Access lets you do that.

With Outlook Voice Access, you can read, reply to and forward the email messages using a standard phone from anywhere. You can perform these actions with the telephone keypad or just by speaking up. The speech recognition system in Outlook Voice Access lets you navigate through menu items and perform action without giving pain to your fingers.

The Outlook Voice Access system can also read out your calendar items, search contacts and initiate a call to any of your Outlook contacts.

Here is the video which shows a demo of Outlook Voice Access for Exchange Sever 2007.

For some people Outlook is just inevitable; either by choice or otherwise. Here is a list of 12 add-ins and toolbars which will enhance your Outlook experience and make the <strike>madbox</strike> inbox more social and productive. These plug-ins will help you derive more value from almost all components of Outlook i.e. the email, addressbook and calendar.

Xobni – Organize Your Inbox

Xobni, which is in invite-only beta at the moment, is a great plug-in to organize your inbox and discover the social network hidden in your emails. It saves you time finding email conversations, contacts and attachments.

By clicking on any mail you can see the sender’s full communication history including past conversations, attachments, contact details and find out who do you know in common based on your email conversations. Xobni also has a fast email search feature and provides various ways of navigating your mailbox.

I have 5 invites for Xobni left with me. If you want the invite, please leave a comment along with a message "I want Xobni invite." The first five to comment along with the message will be sent the invite.

OutSync – Assign Facebook Friends’ Photos To Outlook Contacts

OutSync let you organize your contacts using photos so that you don’t have to think whom that email address belongs to. OutSync lets you sync up photos between Facebook and Outlook.

If you are using ActiveSync to sync your mobile and Outlook, the photo assigned to a contact using OutSync will appear on your mobile phone screen when you receive a call from your Outlook contact.

OutTwit – Use Twitter from Outlook

If you are a Twitter fan and does not want toggle between Outlook and Twitter windows, you can use OutTwit. OutTwit connects Outlook with Twitter so that you can update your Twitter status from Outlook and receive your friends’ Twitters status updates as incoming email messages.

The messages show up in a sub-folder called "Twitter Messages" and you can assign custom categories to new messages. OutTwit also lets you configure the time interval for checking new updates, shorten URLs with tinyurl and manage and search the Twitter updates just like email.

Microsoft Outlook SMS Add-in – Send SMS Using Outlook

The SMS add-in for Outlook works with Outlook 2003 and 2007 and lets you send SMS text messages through most of the GMS mobile phones connected to your PC or laptop. Once you have installed the add-in and connected your mobile phone to your computer via Infrared, Bluetooth or a USB cable, you can start using it without any other kind of download or any special type of subscription from your mobile service provider.

Microsoft has again followed Google on its web efforts and has launched Windows Live Contacts API similar to Google Contacts API, reports TechCrunch.

The Windows Live Contacts API currently works with Facebook, Bebo, Hi5, Tagged and LinkedIn offering users an ability to port contacts from Windows Live account to these services and vice versa. The REST API will let users securely and seamlessly transfer and share their contacts to these service for finding and inviting friends.

The two-way Live Contacts API also allows users to port their social networking contacts to Windows Live account which is being demonstrated at a new site Invite2Messenger which works with Facebook at the moment.

Although Microsoft is singing tunes of Data Portability, the move looks more of a competitive one. Whatever it is, the ultimate winner is the Internet user who now have more options and control over the data.

Google has opened up API for one of the most sought after data from Google accounts, the contacts list. Now programmers have an easy way to integrate user’s contact list into their web and desktop applications as well syncing the mobile devices. The API allows for reading, creating, updating and deleting the contacts data using the GDate protocol based on Atom publishing format. It is a two-way API providing the ability to sync Google contacts with any application and vice versa. I see it as a threat for Plaxo which also provides a similar sync API providing user ability to import and sync contact lists stored in different email accounts.According to Google team, this will allow developers to make robust applications based on contact list without compromising on user’s sensitive information i.e. the Google account username and password. One of the concerns with services providing single sign-on feature is that the applications can have access to almost all the account information which is hidden behind the username and password. Since most of the applications require the users to provide their username and password, it clearly becomes a threat for them. Think of some malicious application which asks for Google account username and password. Once the credentials are provided, the application will have access to any of the Google services and user data including Google Adsense since Google is now trying to integrate your Adsense account with Google account. With the Contact API, Google seems to be solving this problem.

Do you think that Google Contact API poses a serious challenge for Plaxo?
