American Airlines, the largest U.S. airline, has cancelled over 850 flights on Wednesday for inspecting its MD-80 aircrafts for safety concerns. American Airlines had cancelled about 460 flights on Tuesday and according to the latest flight information the cancellation numbers might go up in the coming days.

Regarding the inspections, an American Airlines spokesperson has said,

The inspections focus on proper spacing between two bundles of wires in the plane’s auxiliary hydraulic system, and those wires must be installed exactly according to an FAA directive.

These inspections were triggered when the FAA slapped a fine of $10.2 million on Southwest Airlines for missing inspections and had ordered the checking of maintenance records of all airlines.
