The localized version of MySpace, MySpace India, has been official launched today. MySpace is looking very aggressive in its international expansion plans, especially in the Asia Pacific region with its recent launch in Korea as well. Surprisingly, the “BETA” tag has not been removed from the site yet. Perhaps, it will be removed after the launch party.

The launch will be celebrated with an event at Taj Land’s End Amphitheater in Mumbai and 1,000 MySpace India users will be given an opportunity to see live performances by popular Indian rock bands like Pentagram, Super Fuzz and Them Clones.

In India, MySpace will find Orkut as its biggest competitor unlike Facebook in the U.S. Orkut, in order to dilute the attention of its Indian users from the MySpace launch, has rolled out Orkut applications in India.

MySpace is also looking to rope in Indian developers for the MySpace Developer Platform which allows developers to build and deploy MySpace and OpenSocial applications. For this purpose, the MySpace Developer Platform team will conduct a workshop in Bangalore on April 21, 2008.

Good news for all Orkut fans and all the developers who were waiting for the applications to go live on Orkut. Orkut has silently made the applications live on Orkut profiles.

In all there are 19 applications which are active at the moment and available for adding to your profile. The process works much like Facebook apps and whenever you add a new application, it is displayed to your friends in the updates section.

We had covered some of the Orkut applications in the past but not all of them have gone live. It is possible that Orkut is rolling out applications in phases. Anyway, it is surely exciting and lots of fun to see these applications on Orkut.

Update from Orkut Blog: The Orkut apps are live in India only at the moment. The apps will be rolled out in other countries in the coming days.

Doesn’t the India specific roll out of Orkut apps looks like a deliberate and hasty move by Orkut to dilute the effect of MySpace India’s launch today. Orkut just can’t afford to lose on India where it has the second largest user base after Brazil.

Google had announced the launch of Orkut Sandbox to develop applications for Orkut in November 2007. Though the applications have not gone live on Orkut yet but developers are ready with their application to be deployed once Orkut makes the platform open. Here is the preview of all the 8 applications which are ready and going to be launched on Orkut.

TypeRacer

TypeRacer is a test of your keyboard skills put in the form of car racing game. TypeRacer gives you a text to type and a car which races against the competitors’ cars i.e. the cars given to your Orkut friends. The cars speed depends upon your typing speed and once you finish typing the text given to you the scores are saved and shown on your profile. You can race alone and see how you fare against your Orkut friends who participated in the race as well as race in real-time with your friends who are online at the same time.

Interesting application; atleast it has got some use. Even if you do not enjoy it, you will end up improving your typing speed.

Viibee

If you are bored of reading profiles, Viibee makes it a little interesting by letting you watch videos from potential matches. Once both you and the person you like click “Yes” on each other’s video, you will be able to send video messages. To create your video, all you need is a webcam and a microphone and you can start recording from within the browser window.

A nice application which makes dating on Orkut more lively.

iRead

iRead, in simple words, is Shelfari for Orkut. iRead lets you show off the books you have read in a virtual shelf and discover books based on your interest as well as find new people who have similar reading taste.

iRead already has more than 22 million books in virtual bookshelves along with reviews and ratings.

go4it

A 43Things made for Orkut which lets you set goals and achieve them with the help of your friends. The go4it application allows you to create projects, resolutions, or objectives, share them on your profile and with your friends so that your friends can support you in achieving those goals.

Could be a helpful application provided you use Orkut for serious stuff which is not generally applicable to Orkut users. Orkut is more of fun and less of goals and objectives.

Crazy Story

A kind of crowdsourced story writing game limited to 5 contributions. It lets you start a funny story by putting in few words which is then completed by additions of short sentences from 4 of your friends.

I must tell you that the result of a Crazy Story Game can become really wacky and fun to read.

Hangout

Hangout resembles Meetup in its functionality. If you are tired of hanging out with your friends virtually, Hangout comes for the rescue. It lets you socialize with your Orkut friends offline. Using Hangout, you can schedule offline meetings and events and invite them to attend the same.

I think more than planning an event, Hangout can be a useful application to tell your friends about where they can find you offline on a particular day.

PhotoAttack

PhotoAttack lets you decorate <strike>(or make worse)</strike> your Orkut friends’ photos by attacking them with animations, ambushing them with flying kisses, throwing a snow ball etc. The application provides attacks for all kinds of people on Orkut including your love, friends or rivals.

Since I am not into throwing beer (an application on Facebook lets you throw a beer on your friend), I will keep myself neutral for this application.

MyMiniLife

MyMiniLife is your virtual world on Orkut. It lets you create your own place according to your style, show off all your interests and flaunt your collection on your profile. You can personalize your hangout with photos, music, furniture, and share your favorite movies and games. It also lets your friends send you gifts and leave notes for you in your virtual world.

In my view, MyMiniLife is the most interactive application out of all the applications that we have reviewed. Even the user interface looks very lively with all the objects in place.

It is essential for Orkut application developers to understand the types of users present on Orkut and what are their activities before designing any application. Orkut, though is just like any other social networks, differs a lot in terms of its user demographics and how the users make use of it. As far as my observation goes, Orkut users mostly have virtual relationships which are not based on their offline relationships at all. Unlike Facebook, Orkut users have more friends whom they don’t know at all in the real world.

Now let us know which one of these application, in your view, will be most successful.

Hackers, spammers and phishing scam creators are loving their new destinations. As per the new report on cyber security by Symantec, the users of social networks and search engines are more likely to face attacks of viruses, malicious codes and phishing scams.

Alfred Huger, vice president of engineering at Symantec, says:

The malicious attacks – including recent exploits of users of Google, Facebook, search engines, Mozilla and others – are designed to steal user credentials or launch bigger attacks through the victim’s social network of contacts.

The hackers are switching for their earlier favorite method, email, and now they are using reliable websites to drive traffic to sites loaded with viruses and malacious codes. Previously, I had covered how the combination of Google Trends and Blogspot is being used to spread viruses.

So how do the hackers use these sites:

Social Networks: Hackers use the open architecture of social networks and their platform to create and deploy applications loaded with malicious codes and implant links to malicious websites. Some of the examples are the Facebook application for users to find out who have a crush on them and the recent worm which spread on Orkut through the scraps posted on user profiles.

Search Engines: The hackers are using Google to redirect the users to sites loaded with malicious codes. The search result links which look very relevant to the search and legitimate often redirect users to infected websites. I have myself experienced this and even posted about how the combination of Google Trends and Google Blogger is used for spreading viruses.

Another method which is being used by the cyber criminals for phishing scams is the Google Calendar. Jamz Yaneza, research project manager at Trend Micro, says,

Scammers are sending personalized e-mail as meeting invitations in Google Calendar. Since each e-mail has a different link for each recipient, it is harder for spam filters to detect anything wrong.

So, even if you use an anti-virus tool on your computer, you may not be safe from these attacks. There are other solutions from the security companies like using certified e-mail, web page scanners and browser security tools which can be used to prevent yourself from hacking and phishing attacks. The ultimate tool, however, is being cautious and not to click on any link which looks suspicious or install any application from an unreliable source.
