Wikimedia is a non-profit charitable organization with a goal of providing develop and maintain collaborative projects for open content creation and provide free content to the people.  It operates various online collaborative projects which includes Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikimedia Commons, Wikispecies, Wikinews, Wikiversity, Wikimania and Meta-Wiki.

As per Wikimedia Foundation, “The gift comes at a critical time in the history of Wikimedia, which has just relocated to San Francisco to be closer to Bay Area technical talent, like-minded non-profit organisations, and educational and research institutions.”

Recently, Wikimedia Foundation had also received a $3 million non-profit funding from the Sloan Foundation.  The funds from both of these donations will be used to improve the content quality and support the expansion plans which include offline availability of content.
